The site for this project is located on the fringe of the districts currently being renovated by the city authorities in northern Paris, next to the ancient 19th century fortifications. The central idea underlying the rehabilitation of the district and which led to its success, in partnership with the City authorities, was to have made use of the slab and basement levels of this private residence to convert the vast spaces abandoned by SNCF. The program placed emphasis on commercial activities compatible with the nature of the volumes: Shurgard self-storage warehouse, the first Métro supply store within Paris, followed by a Prevention and Civil Defence Protectorate satellite and then a restaurant for the City authorities’ administrative staff progressively occupied the space between 2005 and 2009, restoring the image and functionality of the podium.
